What is the Big Weekend?
Party on Potton’s Big Weekend was conceived by a group of volunteers who wanted to put on celebrations to mark the Millennium in 2000. So warmly received was that event that ever since there has been a biennial Big Weekend, taking place over the August Bank Holiday. The focal point of the weekend is the Henry Smith playing fields where a marquee is erected to host ticketed events each evening from Friday through to Monday. Family discos, comedy nights, pantomimes, casino nights and the legendary Sound Express all the way from Potton’s German twin town Langenlonsheim are examples of the sort of entertainment to expect.
But Pottonians love to have fun in the daytime too and on Saturday, Sunday and Monday there are a whole host of activities and entertainment designed to provide fun for all the family. Whilst evening events do require the purchase of tickets, daytime activities are free with the costs covered by the fundraising activities undertaken by the committee in the preceding two years. Climbing walls, ‘Human Hungry Hippos’, dog shows, posh picnics with live music, fun runs and bike rides, zorbing, the carnival procession and the ‘Churches Together’ Sunday service have all featured as day time activities in previous Big Weekends.
